FRANCHE-COMTE is the most wooded region of France with 43% of its territory covered by woods. Some of the region’s famous industries include spectacle trade, clock-making and cheese. It is the area where the renowned Comté cheese is produced.

Its largest cities are Besançon (the regional capital, famous for its Vauban citadel), Montbéliard, Belfort and Dôle.
